The new collection by Alessandro Stabile and Martinelli Venezia transforms production waste into design and brings to market pieces with unpredictable colors.
Unexpected Colors is a collection of chairs meant to be both industrial and unique at the same time.
Produced through traditional injection molding, each chair in the collection is a one-of-a-kind piece due to the different shades of color imprinted on every recycled plastic seat.
A Palette of Shades That Turns Waste into Design.
The collection builds upon the phases of traditional plastic chair production, transforming what is typically considered waste into value. To understand the essence of Unexpected Colors, one must look at the industrial process behind the production of colored plastic chairs. Normally, when multiple chairs of different colors are molded, a few transitional pieces are produced with unpredictable color results, making them aesthetically inconsistent. These pieces are usually discarded.
One To One, however, has chosen to recover, catalog, and bring these pieces to the market, even valuing them higher than the standard OTO Chair. In doing so, the brand creates a design that balances between industry and uniqueness.
Alessandro Stabile and Martinelli Venezia explain:
“We wanted to further explore One To One’s circular approach by turning what is typically considered production waste into design and, therefore, value. In the blurred and varied tones of Unexpected Colors, we immediately saw a new chapter in the OTO Chair story.”
Not only does the new collection reclaim waste and turn it into design, but it also implements a system that prevents approximately 5% of each production batch from ending up in landfills. Unpredictability, along with circularity, is thus another key concept of this project, which invites us to embrace imperfections and transform them into design opportunities.
